the ISBN system was only introduced in 1970, so older books simply don't have one. there is no single global registry of every book ever printed - data is spread across publishers, national ISBN agencies, and library systems, each with their own coverage gaps. a book printed in New Zealand in the 1980s may not appear in a US-based database, and vice versa. cover images depend on publishers or retailers uploading them - many older or niche editions were never digitised. different printings of the same title (hardcover, paperback, book club editions) each have their own ISBN, which is why you'll often see dozens of editions for one book. the more obscure the title, the less likely complete data exists anywhere.
